How do I find my video card in my computer?

I just bought the new Sims 3 and I can't play it b/c it says my video card is not compatible and doesn't have the Shader Model 2.0. I found in my files that my current video card is Nvidia GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X. I've read some sites to help me with this upgrade, but I haven't found much help.

If my current card is an AGP, do I have to buy another AGP, or can I buy a PCI? I don't know much about computers and don't even know where in my actual computer the video card is located.

About a year ago, I got new memory cards, so I have more space in my computer. I have a Dell that I purchased back in 2002 or 2003, if that helps at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where my card is located in the machine and what type of card I should get for the best upgrade? And where's the best place to purchase these things at?

Thank you.|||If your current card is AGP, you would not be able to use a PCI Express (sometimes incorrectly called PCIX in descriptions.)

I'm not saying it's impossible, but I have never, ever seen a motherboard that supports both PCI-Express and AGP.

There are video card produced for PCI (no express) and yes, you could technically get one of those, but the performance of the PCI bus (as compared to AGP or PCI-Express is very slow, and the video cards available for plain PCI are generally "left over stock" from years ago because nobody would put a PCI card into a performance computer.

You should probably be able to find an AGP card that supports Sims3, but don't get into the situation where you are spending more money than your computer is worth... Especially considering that a new computer that would play sims3 could probably be had for around $300-$400

As to the question of how to find it... Open your computer, it will be the card that your monitor plugs into. If the monitor plugs into a port that seems to be directly on the motherboard, and not a separate card then the video is built into the motherboard, and you would simply add an AGP card into the 1 slot that looks "different" from the other slots in the machine. Installing an add-in card would essentially disable the onboard video.

I would suggest going to nvidia's web site and getting the most recent drivers for your video card. Sometimes features are added, like shading, in the newer drivers.|||It will most likely be the top most expansion card in the computer, it's where your monitor plugs into.

The MX 440 is very old and so is the AGP standard your motherboard uses, if you want to play the sims 3 well you'll want to buy a new motherboard that supports PCI-Express and buy atleast an ATI 3650.

Remember a new motherboard would mean a new processor, memory and maybe power supply.|||This will tell you everything about your computer here is the website

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.h… the name of the soft ware is everest. it will give you the name of your video card.|||you should realy save up for a new system :)|||IN CONTROL PANAL OR SYSTEM 32 OR LOCAL DISK C|||Geforce 4 mmx 440? Your entire PC is so old it aint funny. You would need a new PC!|||You can buy a PCI card or an AGP one,

BUT NOT PCI-E

You don't have a big selection, but another AGP card would be your best bet

Your Video card is inside the tower of the computer, its usually the highest add on card on the system, and you can tell that its a video card by looking on the outside of the card and seeing the monitor port

Try newegg for a new card

Here are some AGP cards

At the rate your PC is going you'd probably be best off to get a new one though.|||Allot of time i have the same problem. Usually that means your pc is very old and cannot run the game like it should.

you have 2 options:

- Go to your trusted computer salesman and inform wich graph card is compatible with your motherboard.

- buy a good pc, look into the Sims 3 handbook for the system requirements, then look wich pc you should buy to make it work.

(most of the new pc's have a very good shader and will work to solve this common problem)

a comment i want to give you is: Look at the handbook of any game you wish to buy and look at the system requirements and see if your computer can handle the game. Otherwise you will get a problem like this.

memory cards only serve more working memory so your pc can handle more proccesses or it will be able to open executables and keep them running. Most pc's at the moment have 4 Gigs of ram wich is very good if you have a pc that is running a high and big anti-virus like Mcfee or norton.

i hope this helps you :)|||Chances are you cannot use PCI express (newer graphics cards) ..these use a larger port on your motherboard and are usually black or white.

If your current graphics card if AGP you should get an AGP..they can support 2.0 Pixel shaders, but aren't the cheapest things around.

For example is a good card (I have it in one of my computers)

You could also use the very old PCI slots for a graphics card if you can find one, but I would recommend the AGP over these

The graphics card port is the one which has your VGA cable plugged into, and is near the PCI slots at the back of the pc.

You will receive instructions to install and set your new card with the card itself.

If you get stuck, feel free to IM me and I'll try to walk you through the process (ganja_man.91@hotmail.co.uk)
